Ufomammut formed in the late ’90s, founded by Poia (guitars, FX) and Urlo (bass, vocals, FX, synths), rising from the ashes of their previous band, Judy Corda, and soon joined by Vita (drums). For more than two decades, Ufomammut has combined the heaviness and majesty of dynamic riff worship with a nuanced understanding of psychedelic tradition and musical history, creating a cosmic, futuristic, technicolor sound designed for total immersion.
The 2022 album Fenice (“phoenix” in Italian) represents endless rebirth and the ability to begin again when everything seems doomed. Released via Neurot Recordings and Supernatural Cat, it is the first recording to feature new drummer Levre alongside Poia and Urlo, following Vita’s departure from the band in 2020, marking a new chapter in the group’s history and unveiling a more intimate and liberated sound. Each oscillation in their music feels inevitable. The members of Ufomammut are, after all, masters of their craft, and when it comes to creating enveloping sonic journeys into the unknown - such as on their latest album, Hidden - it is their uninhibited sense of exploration that allows them to break new sonic ground. Poia and Urlo are both founding members of the rock ’n’ roll graphic design collective Malleus and the label Supernatural Cat, which most recently released Urlo’s solo albums under the name The Mon. Like any good psychedelic trip, the music of Ufomammut has always been inextricably intertwined with visual art. Poia describes the band’s longer compositions as being “like a painting,” reinforcing the relevance and importance of visual art within Ufomammut’s music.
